ASSITEJ is a World Theatre Network for children and young people.
ASSITEJ is a French acronym for the Association International du Theatre pour l’Enfance et la Jeunesse – in English, the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People.
ASSITEJ is an international network of member organizations and individuals active in the area of theatre for young people, creating links through ASSITEJ centres in 80 countries.
Every 3 years the organisation meets for the World Congress that includes the Performing Arts Festival and General Assembly. The Festival showcases the best theatre for children and young people from around the globe. The General Assembly is held during the 10 day Festival and provides delegates from over 80 member countries the opportunity to determine the direction of ASSITEJ over the next 3 years and to celebrate the work.
It is the world’s most significant cultural event for children, young people and their families. 2008 will be the second time the event has been held in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Performing Arts Festival is an exciting and vibrant public Festival that connects and engages with children and young people aged between 18 months and 26 years, and their families. It will provide audiences with unique opportunities for immersing themselves in culturally relevant, lively and engaging theatre. The Festival will run for 10 days and comprise an exhilarating and thought provoking range of live theatre shows, dance, circus and puppetry and will engage with every primary and secondary school in South Australia.
The General Assembly is an eclectic meeting of the creative minds involved in ASSITEJ. The meeting is comprised of over 200 delegates, with representation from every continent around the world.
ASSITEJ is complementary to the other high profile arts events held in Adelaide, such as the Adelaide Bank Festival of Arts, the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the Adelaide Film Festival and WOMADelaide.
The Performing Arts Festival and General Assembly is an event that is of national and international significance and will take place at the Adelaide Festival Centre from 9 - 18 May 2008. It will also take in the North Terrace cultural precinct, Rundle Mall and the Odeon Theatre in Norwood.
